What Are Macronutrients?

Macronutrients are the nutrients your body needs in larger quantities to provide energy, support growth, and maintain vital bodily functions. They’re broadly categorized into proteins, carbohydrates, and fats—each with a distinct role in maintaining health and fitness.

Let's break down their unique roles:

1. Protein: The Builder

Protein is often called the 'building block' of the body, and for good reason! It's essential for repairing and growing muscle tissue, producing hormones and enzymes, and keeping you feeling full and satisfied after meals. Whether you're an athlete or simply aiming to maintain a healthy body composition, adequate protein intake is non-negotiable for recovery and strength.

General Guideline: A great starting point is to aim for 1 gram of protein per pound of your ideal body weight per day. For example, if your healthiest weight is 150 pounds, you'd target 150 grams of protein daily.

2. Carbohydrates: The Energizer

  • Found in: Avocados, nuts, seeds, olive oil, fatty fish (like salmon), coconut oil.

While exact macronutrient ratios vary greatly depending on your individual goals (muscle gain, fat loss, performance), activity level, and body type, here are some general principles to consider:

  • Balance: Aim to consume adequate amounts of all three macros daily, prioritizing whole, unprocessed foods and limiting ultra-processed options.

  • Prioritize Protein: A higher protein intake is generally optimal for most people, whether sedentary or extremely active. Recent studies even show positive body recomposition results (like losing body fat) from significantly increasing protein, with no other changes to diet or exercise!

  • Smart Carbs: Focus on nutrient density with carbs to help balance blood sugar while still giving your body the energy it needs. Eating fruit won’t make you fat, but too many cookies might derail your goals. You can also consider timing your carbohydrate intake around your workouts to maximize energy and aid in recovery.

  • Healthy Fats: Include sources of healthy fats with your meals for overall health and hormone function.
